Cause-and-Effect Reasoning Ladders
Science prompts often fail when they name an effect but ask for a nearby object instead of the mechanism. A reasoning ladder keeps each link visible and helps an explanation stop at the claim the source supports.
Water cycle
Solar energy warms surface water.
Liquid water evaporates into water vapor.
Cooling vapor condenses into clouds.
Water returns as precipitation when droplets or crystals grow heavy enough.
Plate movement
Earth’s lithosphere is divided into moving plates.
Plates converge, diverge, or slide past one another.
Stress, melting, or uplift develops at many boundaries.
Earthquakes, volcanoes, trenches, or mountains can result.
Planet formation
Gas and dust orbit a young star.
Particles collide and begin to stick or gather.
Gravity helps larger bodies attract more material.
Repeated growth produces planet-sized objects.
Turn a Label Question Into a Process Question
“What is evaporation?” tests vocabulary. “Why does a wet surface dry faster when more liquid molecules enter the gas phase?” tests the relationship behind the term. Both can be fair, but the answer choices and explanation must match the requested level.
A causal explanation should avoid turning correlation into mechanism. When a source states that plate boundaries are associated with many earthquakes, do not rewrite that as a guarantee that every earthquake occurs on a mapped boundary.
Science questions move from observation to explanation: planetary order, atmospheres, photosynthesis, states of matter, plate motion, and the physical force behind orbits and falling objects. The emphasis is on concepts a player can reason through.

Match Cause to Effect
When a prompt asks why, remove choices that only rename the observation. The right answer should supply a mechanism, ingredient, or force.
Vocabulary Is the Start, Not the Finish
Easy prompts identify a planet or gas. Medium prompts connect a process with its inputs. Harder prompts combine two facts—such as composition and percentage—or ask what evidence supports an explanation.
